Elements of Democracy

Available from the Center for Civic Education

Elements of Democracy is a resource that attempts to shed as much light as might reasonably be expected upon the meaning or meanings of the fundamental ideas surrounding the theory and practice of democracy. Explaining these ideas will hopefully bring some clarity to the subject matter and allow readers’ entrance into the conversation of democracy, moving them to inquire further into the significance of the ideas as well as the controversies that underlie them.

Ideas, after all, have consequences. The ideas that surround the theory and practice of democracy are among the most consequential in the modern world and are destined to become even more so as the democratic revolution continues its sweep across the globe. All the more reason, therefore, for young people as well as adults to become more deeply acquainted with them. Elements of Democracy is intended to be the first step.
