Democracy as a Starting Point: The Civic Journey in Latin America

A Social Studies Curriculum for Secondary Students

Democracy as a Starting Point is a five-lesson curriculum unit developed by The American Federation of Teachers Educational Foundation through the Civitas Latin America Program – a civic education exchange program administered by the Center for Civic Education.

Latin America is a vast region of the world, populated by diverse peoples with equally diverse histories, traditions and political tendencies. It is also a region about which many American students know very little, despite the strong social, economic and political ties between the United States and the countries of Latin America. This unit attempts to help students learn about the countries of the region, focusing specifically on the political and civic lives of Latin American citizens as they undergo what many have termed a democratic revolution.
